Opposition Leader Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s age at 93 should not be a factor in one’s voting decision, PKR told Sarawakians today.

“He may be 93 years old, but he is still mentally fit to lead the country again if we win more parliamentary seats,” PKR women national vice head Voon Shiak Ni said at a press conference.

She said Pakatan Harapan (PH) picked Dr Mahathir as their prime minister designate because he still commanded public respect, particularly among the Malays.

Voon said many Sarawakians, including PKR supporters, have asked her why PH chose Dr Mahathir to be their prime minister candidate at such an old age.

She said she told them to look beyond the age of the former prime minister, as the main objective was to win more parliamentary seats for PH to take over Putrajaya.

“In the last general election, the Opposition garnered more votes than the Barisan Nasional, but could not capture power because we didn’t have enough parliamentary seats.

“With Dr Mahathir as prime minister-designate, we hope to win 20 to 30 more seats in the Malay heartlands in the peninsula,” Voon said.

She said Sarawakians must have confidence in PH if they want to see a change in the federal government.

Voon said the 14th general elections was the best chance for PH to beat the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN), “otherwise, we will never see a change in the federal government in the next 50 years or so.”

“We have suffered enough under the Barisan over the last 50 years due to its unjust policies like the implementation of Goods and Services Tax and we don’t want to suffer again in the next 50 years,” she said.
