Number of floods victims in Sarawak rises

The highest number of flood victims was recorded in Samarahan, with 542 people from 155 families at seven relief centres. - Bernama file picA total of 1,273 victims from 322 families were housed in 14 flood relief centres in Sarawak as of 9pm tonight.

A spokesman for the Sarawak State Disaster Management Committee (JPBNS) said the 14 relief centres were located in Kuching, Samarahan, Serian and Mukah.

He said the highest number of victims was recorded in Samarahan, with 542 people from 155 families at seven relief centres.

“A total of 291 victims from 61 families are at three relief centres in Kuching, and 336 victims from 90 families at three relief centres in Serian.

“As for Mukah, 104 victims from 16 families are being housed at a relief centre,” the spokesman said in a statement tonight.

Meanwhile, in Sabah, the state’s Civil Defence Force issued a statement saying eight villages and three primary schools in Membakut were flooded due to Sungai Membakut bursting its banks following heavy rain yesterday.

The agency said the eight villages were Kampung Bambangan, Kampung Sinoko, Kampung Lumantak; Kampung Baitam, Kampung Lembah Poring, Kampung Sinduk, Kampung Baitam Laut, and Kampung Jambatan Baru.

The three affected schools were SK Bambangan, SK Sinoko and SK Pekan, the statement added.
