ACS taken aback by Tengku Adnan’s remark on churches

Image result for Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan TengkuAssociation Of Churches In Sarawak (ACS) has expressed shock and sadness over the uncalled-for remark by Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor that Christians should stop spreading lies against the government in the church.

A statement issued by ACS secretary general Elder Ambrose Linang said such baseless and sweeping remarks could undermine the sanctity and integrity of the Church and the Christian community in Malaysia.

“Unlike some Friday sermons which are usually written by certain religious authorities, the church sermons are the individual works of priests and clergy who dedicate their lives spreading the Gospel and words of God based on the holy scriptures in the Bible to their church members with prayers and blessings for Malaysians of all faiths including the country’s rulers and government ministers.

“As Christians approach the season of Lent, it comes as a shock and with deep sadness for the Church to be accused by the Minister of spreading lies against the government.

“It is unfair to accuse Christians of spreading fake news or lies in church when we are observing World Interfaith Harmony week along with the various charitable and educational functions of the Church,” said the statement.

He pointed out that the month of February each year marks the beginning of Lent which is traditionally observed by Christians as a period for reflection and penitence, but this year Malaysians enter the month of February with an uncalled-for remark by the minister.

“The minister would do well to promote interfaith harmony and show respect for the constitutional rights of all Malaysians to practise their religion in peace and harmony in any part of the Federation,” it said.

ACS also called upon the minister in question to apologize to Christians for his baseless and insensitive remarks.

It also further called upon the federal government to establish a constitutional court to safeguard the constitutional rights of all Malaysians to religious freedom and the fundamental liberties enshrined in the Federal Constitution.

An online news portal had reported that Tengku Adnan gave the warning during a community programme in Kuala Lumpur earlier Saturday.

Not long after that, Tengku Adnan issued a statement denying that he had said that some had been using churches to spread fake news and lies about the government, clarifying that his advice was intended for all religious places of worship.

“I did not say that the church is a place to spread slander. I only reminded all religious places of worship to carry on with their religious activities and not to become a centre to spread fake news that could arouse discontent against the government,” he had said.

Tengku Adnan also said he only referred to churches as an example because his message was to all places of worship, including mosques, surau and temples.

In response to this, The Council of Churches of Malaysia also expressed shock at remarks made by the minister urging churches not to speak untruths in their sermons.

Council of Churches general secretary Reverend Hermen Shastri said in a statement issued on Saturday that such remark was unfounded and an affront to the Church for the minister to insinuate that religious duty in preaching during worship services are ‘lies’ because it is critical of societal issues.
