Deputy Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Hilmi Yahaya said the 59-year-old man was an old case in which he was bitten by a dog in November last year.

“The rabies outbreak is still under control, I advise anyone infected with a dog bite to get immediate treatment at a government clinic or hospital.

“If you are bitten by a dog, immediately wash the wound and go to the hospital for anti-rabies vaccination,” he said in a press conference after a get together with the Selangor Visitors Board Members and Health Clinic Advisory Panel here today.

The newspaper today reported that the man died at 4.44pm on Sunday after being admitted to the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) on Jan 25.

The victim reportedly had a dog bitten history on Nov 27 last year and only sought treatment at a private clinic but was not referred to the SGH for anti-rabies vaccination.

Dr Hilmi said as of yesterday, six deaths had been reported as a result of the outbreak and the ministry was working with the Kuching Veterinary Service Department to curb the epidemic.

Since June last year seven people were admitted to several hospitals in Sarawak due to dog bite, with six who have died, including the latest fatality on Sunday and only one survived.

At the event, he also donated a total of RM300,000 to 60 health clinics and another RM120,000 to 12 hospitals throughout Selangor.
