Former Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Sarawak secretary, Idris Bohari has decided to stand as independent candidate in Saratok parliamentary seat.

Idris, 56, told The Borneo Post yesterday he made the decision after thorough consideration and consultation with friends and family.

“I am going back to Saratok tomorrow to discuss with my supporters, and will buy the nomination form upon my return to Kuching,” he said.

Idris who quit PKR is now a member of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) sub branch in Taman Malihah here.

“I want to offer myself as the voice for rural people of Saratok, especially my own village in Kaba who are still living on water from the well while our roads will be impassable during rainy season,” he explained.

Idris is no novice in elections as he stood under Keadilan banner in Saratok in the 1999 general election where he garnered 5,042 votes or
32 per cent of the votes losing to Datuk Peter Tinggom Kamarau who got 10,545 votes or 67.65 per cent of the votes.

In the following election, Idris stood as independent candidate in Santubong against Datuk Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar where he only managed to get 2,030 votes whereas his rival secured 12,590 votes.

In 2006, Idris once again fried his luck. This time in Pantai Damai state seat where secured 3,053 votes losing to Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi who got 5,217 votes. The Saratok incumbent is Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom who won narrowly against Ali Biju of PKR in 2013. Mawan garnered 11,600 votes while Ali Biju secured 9,519 votes.

Datuk Rosli Abang Paleng who stood as independent candidate only managed to get 681 votes.

  1. Politics is not only about commitment to fight for justice and the rights of the rakyat but also about credibility and integrity of the candidate who offer to serve. This guy definitely does not have both credibility and integrity based on his past career with PRS and now PBB. He should back a Pakatan Harapan candidate instead of contesting as an independent .
