Entry of Baru, Rita turn up the heat in Selangau

Filed under: Politics — Hornbill Unleashed @ 8:00 AM

The shock fielding of state Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) chairman Baru Bian in Selangau by Pakatan Harapan has turned this Barisan Nasional (BN) stronghold into a hot seat in GE14, says political analyst Assoc Prof Awang Azman

There is also the uncertain factor of incumbent MP Datuk Joseph Entulu Belaun who was sacked by his party Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) last Sunday and replaced by Barisan Nasional (BN) with corporate legal advisor Rita Sarimah Insol, 57, to defend the the seat.

Rita will be the first woman candidate fielded by PRS in state or parliamentary elections.

Awang Azman believed Entulu, who was a minister in the Prime Minister’s Department still has strong influence in Selangau.

Entulu has yet to make his stand known although many believed that Entulu would not want to risk losing his “BN status” by standing as an independent because he might be harbouring thoughts of challenging his sacking from PRS later.

Some believed the sacking is questionable until the Registrar of Society or the Court makes the final decision.

Baru, a Lun Bawang, is fishing in troubled waters by capitalizing on the internal current crisis of PRS in the Iban-dominant seat, he said.

“Although he knows the current political reality there, PKR and Baru are probably thinking that they should not be missing this golden opportunity,”

Awang Azman believed that Baru would bank on his reputation as the lawyer who fought for NCR land owners as the Selangau constituency has a high number NCR land cases.

The lack of development in the area and poor infrastructure would also be an issue for the opposition to harp on.

While it is now confirmed that Baru and Rita have entered the fray, the final number of candidates in Selangau will only be known on nomination day and then there is the slim chance that Entulu might throw his hat in at the last moment.

“PKR has a better chance if there is a three-corner contest if Datuk Joseph Entulu were to contest in Selangau as an independent candidate,” Awang Azman speculated.

In the last parliamentary election, Entulu stood on BN-PRS ticket to secure a handsome victory against Sarawak Workers Party’s Datuk Sng Chee Hua and PKR’s Joshua Jabeng.

Entulu garnered 12, 040 votes against Sng (4,485) and Joshua (3,891).
