NONEDukau Papau

Sarawak Parti Keadilan Rakyat claimed today that state legal consultant JC Fong, who represented the state at the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) on human rights in general last week, had misled the UN on the status of native customary rights (NCR) land and issues related to it.

“It is embarrassing to Sarawak and the country and as such, Fong should be removed as the state consultant,” Sarawak PKR chairperson Baru Bian said.

“If Fong’s statement is accurate as reported, I am appalled at his blatant attempt to mislead the UN on the situation our indigenous people are facing in Sarawak. (more…)

Lun Bawangs stopping road project that is to pass through their water catchment area

Sematong Express

An angry group of Lun Bawangs has blocked the construction of a Ba’Kelalan-Bario road project, accusing the federal government of failing to listen to the wishes of the community.

The road project, under the Malaysian Army’s Jiwa Murni programme, is already about one kilometre long stretch into the Muda river catchment area when the Lun Bawangs stopped the contractor engaged by the Malaysian army.

“We have told the army’s contractor and its workers to stop constructing the road and to move their heavy machineries away,” Paren Padan said in a recorded statement emailed to the media.

Allow longhouse chiefs to disburse funds

Joseph Tawie

Inevitably the federal government always ‘unconsciously’ forgets Sabah and Sarawak when making national plans.

Why is the federal government asking rural hardcore poor Dayaks to fill up Internal Revenue Department (IRD) forms before collecting their gift of RM500?

Strange as it may sound this is one of the conditions listed for recipients of the government’s RM500 aid announced by Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak recently.

In addition Sarawak’s poor must also contend with the cost of travel to the nearest IRD office to collect their gift. (more…)
