Motion to review Sabah, Sarawak agreements rejected

An emergency motion tabled by PKR’s Penampang MP Darell Leiking for a special commission to review the 18 and 20 points agreements made with Sabah and Sarawak for the formation of Malaysia was rejected by Parliament today as it is “not urgent”.

While acknowledging that the matter is “definite”, deputy speaker Ismail Mohamed Said rejected the motion raised under Standing Order 18(1), even though a review has been overdue for 50 years.

Darell said he was perplexed by the reason Ismail gave and argued that the recent Allah ruling by the Court of Appeal, which resulted in conflicting statements from the prime minister and several of his cabinet ministers, as well as several long-standing issues, such as oil royalty, merited a review. Villagers block roads to Baram dam site, want heavy machinery removed

A group of native villagers who have been protesting against the Baram dam today demanded that Sarawak Energy Bhd (SEB) keep its word and remove the heavy machinery at the dam site now that the three-week grace period has lapsed.

Peter Kallang, chairman of non-governmental organisation Save Sarawak Rivers (SAVE), said six natives from among the hundreds of villagers who blocked the access road leading to the dam site, handed the letter to SEB. (more…)

Blockades bring work on Baram Dam to standstill


Natives have successfully blocked works on the Baram Dam and its access road in Sarawak, says the Swiss-based Bruno Manser Fund.

In a statement, it said that last Wednesday, indigenous landowners had set up two blockades in the Baram district on the Malaysian part of Borneo. This has prevented workers in the area from pursuing their work on the proposed Baram Dam.

The natives demand the immediate halt to all planning and construction works at the Baram Dam and its access road. (more…)

Last year’s budget announcement was a painful revelation of what the federal leaders thought about Borneo. Will this year be different?

Hours away from the Budget 2014 announcement, there is continued skepticism and wonder over how grateful Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak will be to Sabah and Sarawak.

Random checks with grassroots leaders from both sides of the political fence drew guarded views and outright skepticism.

Enthusiasm in Sabah and Sarawak is running at an all time low mostly due to Najib’s (mis)handling of the Allah issue and his refusal to censor Umno lackeys and ‘ultras’ and his policy inconsistencies. (more…)
