‘Explain plunge in maths, science scores or quit’

Education Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has been urged to explain Malaysia’s drop in science and mathematics scores, failing which he should resign.

DAP publicity chief Tony Pua said that Malaysia’s drop in the scores of both subjects since 1999 is the highest among 42 countries surveyed in the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMMS) 2011.

PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar said Muhyiddin should resign if he could not explain this or outline convincing steps to redress the issue. (more…)

Mindsets must change

Malaysia needs leaders such as Nurul Izzah in order to progress, lest we stay in the Middle Ages’ mentality.

I read with much excitement the current debacle over Nurul Izzah Anwar’s statement that there should be no compulsion in religion and that it applies to Muslims as well.

Nurul Izzah is right in saying that all Malaysians, including Malays, have the right of freedom of religion, that is freedom to choose their own religion. This is a basic fundamental right as enshrined in Article 11 of the Federal Constitution. (more…)

Last Saturday’s forum in Subang Jaya, on the topic ‘Islamic state: Which version? Whose responsibility?’, was jointly organised by the Oriental Hearts and Minds Study Institute and Islamic Renaissance Front.

At the forum, Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar had said that there was “no compulsion in religion” when responding to a question from a member of the audience on whether religious freedom also applied to Malays.
