Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak should consider appointing his wife as Minister of Special Affairs as she seems to be adept at carrying out the duties of several ministers, said former New Straits Times group editor-in-chief Datuk A. Kadir Jasin (pic).

Kadir, in commenting on the recent Umno general assembly, said from the various reports on the event, the most popular topic was Najib’s public praise of his wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, for her “good deeds” to the country. (more…)

The world’s MOST FRUGAL first couple – Najib and Rosmah?

The world's MOST FRUGAL first couple - Najib and Rosmah? Malaysia Chronicle

Believe it or not, Prime Minister Najib Razak and wife Rosmah Mansor are among the most ‘frugal’ first couples in the world, according Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Shahidan Kassim.

“I believe our spending for the complex is among the lowest because of the frugal spending system we have in place there,” Shahidan told Parliament on Monday.

It must be sad for the prime minister’s wife, Rosmah Mansor, that for receiving an honorary doctorate from a foreign university, she got so much flak.

Curtin University has apologised for referring to Rosmah Mansor as the first lady of Malaysia, when announcing that it had conferred her with an honorary doctorate.

Curtin University vice-chancellor Jeanette Hacket, in a statement today, said the university had taken note of the criticism over the award and the use of the term “first lady”.

“We also accept that our use of the term ‘first lady’ has offended some people, and apologise for this. (more…)

Rosmah’s Deepak brings the taint of Altantuya into Malaysia’s corporate world

Rosmah's Deepak brings the taint of Altantuya into Malaysia's corporate world

Deepak Jaikishan, who shot to fame following the statutory declarations made by a private investigator implicating Prime Minister Najib Razak in the Altantuya Shaaribuu murder, is now making waves of a different sort and in perhaps the most cynical of places – Malaysia’s corporate world, where critics often deplore, business is intertwined with politics.

Deepak, also known as First Lady Rosmah Mansor’s ‘carpet man’ because his family runs a rug shop along the bustling Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman road, has emerged as a substantial shareholder in Envair Holdings Bhd, a loss-making producer of air and water filters slated to be transformed into an oil-and-gas company. The stock is listed on the Mesdaq Board for small and mostly tech shares.

“This is a major change for him. Even though Envair is a small firm, it is still a bigger and different environment compared to his carpet business which was mostly retail-based. It shows how powerful connections are and sometimes it is who you know rather than what you know that makes the difference,” a research analyst at a large brokerage told Malaysia Chronicle. (more…)
