Concern Over Australia’s Mega-Pay Outs To Taib Family Firm

Sarawak Report

No compromise – campaigners are appalled that wealthy Taib interests are being paid to keep logging Tasmania’s forests

Concerns have been mounting over the millions of dollars beingpaid out by the Australian government to the company Ta Ann, owned by the fabulously wealthy cousin and business proxy of the Chief Minister, Hamed Sepawi.

The amount paid out so far in incentives first to locate in Tasmania; then to surrender previously agreed logging rights and now to build a new mill (announced last week) total AUS$44.6million.

It is money Ta Ann could easily have raised itself, since Sepawi is one of Malaysia’s wealthiest individuals and protestors say the payments are condoning corruption and human rights abuses in Sarawak, while also rewarding highly incompetent and deeply questionable decisions made by the Tasmanian officials and politicians who welcomed the timber company into the state back in 2006. Australia Buys Out Taib-Linked Logging Contract To Save Its Forests

Sarawak Report

Message that has finally started to get through – but Ta Ann is still logging in Tasmania

In a surprise development the Taib family company Ta Ann has accepted a multi-million pound settlement from the Australian Government, in order to give up major timber supplies in the state of Tasmania.

The move is a stunning vindication for environmental campaigners in the state, who have suffered vilification and arrests for protesting against the logging in Tasmania’s high conservation value forest areas.

However, it has highlighted serious questions as to why the Sarawak company was ever allowed such permits in the first place and why, despite the payment, Ta Ann is still being allowed to source wood from Tasmania’s threatened forests? (more…)

SEB: Hydro Tasmania’s exit was pre-planned

FMT Staff

Taib Mahmud-linked Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) claims Hydro Tasmania was “frustrated” with the factual inaccuracies flogged by its critics.

A bristling Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) claims that Hydro Tasmania was not “pulling out of Sarawak” and that their exit was “planned from the beginning”.

“This phased reduction has been planned from the beginning. It has not been influenced in any way by the regrettable misinformation campaign by foreign detractors,” SEB said alluding to a national level campaign launched in Australia two weeks ago to compel Australian government-owned Hydro Tasmania to withdraw its participation in the controversial development of dams in Sarawak. Holland Condemns Malaysia’s Timber Certification!

Sarawak Report

Tasmanian Independent MP Paul Harriss hob-nobs while ‘on holiday’ in Sarawak with corrupt dictator Taib Mahmud’s two top cronies Awang Tenggah and Len Talif Saleh.

Taib’s foreign business partners are working hard to present a picture that all is well in Sarawak and to imply that there are no issues with the wood logged from the state or its plantation programmes.

Indeed, last week Ta Ann Tasmania’s Chief Executive David Ridleylaunched a barage of justifications defending his company against a report that has revealed that Ta Ann products are falsely promoted as ‘eco-wood’, thereby deceiving consumers.

Still no answer to the charges of false eco-labelling! (more…)

The Chief Executive Officer of Greenpeace Australia Pacific, Dr Linda Selvey, has personally written to Prime Minister Julia Gillard, backing requests by the Bruno Manser Foundation, PKR and Sarawak Report for an investigation into the Taib family’s string of investments in that country.

“Eco-friendly and sustainable” – Japanese retailers advertising Ta Ann wood products highlight it Tasmanian origin

Last week Ta Ann accused The Green Party in Tasmania of false advertising over logging in Sarawak.

But now advertisements promoting Ta Ann’s products as ’Eco-wood’ have been challenged by a devastating expose of the company’s own role in Tasmania!

The report, published today by the Huon Valley Environment Centre of Tasmania, spells out Ta Ann’s hypocrisy and it is uncompromisingly titled “Behind the Veneer: Forest destruction and Ta Ann Tasmania’s lies”. [click for report]

Over 50 pages, the troubling expose details how the Sarawak timber giant’s decision to invest in Tasmania was specifically aimed at targeting the growing market for environmentally friendly, sustainable wood products, but has ended up deceiving consumers. (more…)
