Mahathir partly responsible for Umno-Baru’s Sungai Limau loss

Mariam Mokhtar

When will the father and son duo learn? Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir is the Menteri Besar of Kedah and responsible for the party’s campaign strategy. His father, former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, thought his influence could work magic on voters, but Umno-Baru failed.

Mukhriz failed to learn his lesson in last month’s Umno-Baru vice-presidential elections, when he failed to be elected. He should have learnt that he must strike out on his own and be his own man. He should have told his father to stay away and give him breathing space to do what he thinks is best for the party. People are repelled by the sight of a man whose father tags along overseeing everything he does.

Malays are both the problem and solution

Mariam Mokhtar

In order to have a deeper insight into Malaysian politics, one must first attempt to understand the Malay mind, or more importantly, the Umno Baru Malay mind. If the shutters are down, no progress will be made. If the blinds are half drawn, some development may take place, but if the curtains are fully open, much progress is promised. Until the Umno-Malay mind is liberated, everyone else, from ordinary Malays to non-Malays, will fumble around in the dark.

Despite their differences, Datuk Seri Najib Razak and former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad were unanimous in blaming the Chinese for Barisan National’s (BN) poor performance in GE13. (more…)

If some of you think that this nation is in a mess, then blame the Malays because they are the problem. Malays know that Malaysia is not the land of gold and honey any longer.

In these difficult times, they have become more aware of their surroundings; but one other person has noticed this sea-change in the Malays.

He is former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad. He knows that a thinking and independent Malay is detrimental to his legacy, his creation – Umno-Baru – and to the well-being of his family’s fortunes. Today’s self-aware Malay is Mahathir’s downfall. (more…)

Zaid IbrahimDatuk Zaid Ibrahim’s (right) entry into PKR has given a boost to the opposition party. The reform minded moderate had been wooed by both PKR and DAP even before he resigned from the BN government in September last year over the use of ISA on civilians. Zaid was subsequently booted out by Umno for his presence at opposition functions. Well respected by both PAS and DAP, Zaid is expected to play a role in strengthening ties between the three Pakatan Rakyat parties.

Datuk Zaid was a prime target for the opposition’s courtship because it was clear that his reform minded personality made him a misfit in the Badawi administration and better fit for the social justice ideology of Pakatan Rakyat. Zaid is indeed a good catch for PKR but there is another prominent Malay leader who can also be said to be a “misfit” in Umno and whom the opposition should court assiduously. The person I’m referring to is none other than Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, also affectionately known as Ku Li. (more…)
