It has been discovered that many young Penan women in the interior of Sarawak are being left to look after their children on their own without any moral and financial support from their husbands.

The Baram branch of Sarawak Penan Women’s Association said they had unearthed quite a number of cases where these young mothers were abandoned by their spouses for no apparent reason. (more…)

On 3 April 2013, the PM announced the dissolution of Parliament and Malaysians will go to the polls in the closest battle ever for the seat of power in Malaysia.

Six million voters are women and for too long now, women have been ignored despite making up half the Malaysian population. The ruling party has historically designated women a secondary and supporting role to men. Even after 56 years, our society, religious discourse, laws, culture and politics have been characterised by misogyny and sexism. The inaction by a paralysed government, devoid of morals and respect, has made this so pervasive and ingrained that women’s status has become subservient to men: their rights dismissed or worse, belittled. ‘Women’s minister Najib must solve Penan rape plight’

Premier Najib Abdul Razak should live up to his position as acting women, family and community development minister by addressing the long overdue issue of rape against Penan women, Zuraida Kamaruddin (PKR-Ampang) told Parliament this evening.

Pointing out that this was the first time a man was helming the Women’s Ministry, Zuraida(right) said the people expected something different.

“What is the government’s action against the offenders who raped Penan women in Sarawak as reported in by the Rights of Penan Women Taskforce?

“Seeing that the Women’s Ministry has been taken over by a man, I urge the prime minister to investigate this matter and bring the offenders to justice,” she said during the budget debate session. (more…)

Women’s Aid Organisation says it is not up to Najib to decide if there is a need for women’s rights movement.

Women’s Aid Organisation (WAO) took strong exception to Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak’s dismissal of women’s rights movements in Malaysia.

Najib today dismissed the need for women’s rights groups in Malaysia, saying equality has been given “from the start”.

The prime minister claimed Malaysia is even more advanced than developed nations in this aspect. (more…)
