Lihan’s joke ” Baram dam a gift from God for the Orang Ulu “

Telang Usan assemblyman reiterated that the Baram hydroelectric dam project is a gift from God for the minority Orang Ulu.

“I am not ashamed to say that the mega project is a gift from God because as a result of the project the government will build a 60-km road from Long Lama to the dam site at Long Keseh, benefitting about 12,000 Kayans from nine longhouses along the river,” he said.

He said he had proposed to have a road to link all the longhouses along Baram River before the dam was even conceptualised, more as a wish for a better  life for the people.

The road came into the picture when the government proposed the Baram dam, he added.

“What I am saying is that if there is no Baram dam, there won’t be any road being built. It does not make any economic sense just building a road like that. The proposed dam justifies the building of the RM500-million road,” explained Lihan.

Urging his critics to look at the bigger picture, he said the stretch of road from Long Lama made up Package B of the overall road project under Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy. He said the package cost the government a massive RM500 million.

Package A is the stretch of road from Beluru to Sungai Tinjar encompassing Lapok road.

The upgrading of 35.73-km Lapok road at a cost of about RM101 million commenced three days ago and is expected to be completed in three years, Lihan revealed.

“Our people who are already poor have had to buy 4WD vehicles to travel through this road, having to bear high maintenance cost due to wear and tear their vehicles were subject to. But this will be behind us three years from now,” said Lihan.

Lihan said tender for Package B of the SCORE project would close on Sept 24 and both packages would start this year.

The assemblyman urged Baram folk not to politicise the Baram dam project.

“I urge for understanding and acceptance of this mega project. The expected life-span of a dam is around 500 years. The dam will generate cheap energy for the community. Let us play a part in nation-building by accepting this project.

“Of course there are certain groups instigating the people to reject this project. In life, one has to accept challenges. If the Orang Ulu reject this project, there won’t be an opportunity like this for a very, very long time, maybe not during our lifetime on earth,” said Lihan. – The Borneo post

  3. Tuan Besar Lihan Jok,
How dare you saying that the dam is a gift from GOD????? ada otak ker? or you punya otak dah di tukar jadi otak beruk…
Dah nak start dah RMK10 kawan……tak nampak pun…. Mana pula janji pemberian benih sawit untuk masyarakat Long Pillah??? sampai skarang makcik dan pakcik saya tak terima pun…. Mana janji Taib dan BN hendak jadikan Long Lama menjadi bandar IT dalam masa 5 tahun… Dah masuk tahun ke-6 dah kawan, Long Lama masih macam tu juga…

WAHAI ANAK-ANAK BARAM YANG SAYANGKAN TANAH BARAM.
KITA SAMA-SAMA BANGUN DAN MENENTANG PEMBINAAN DAM BARAM
SAMPAIKAN SEGALA MAKLUMAT YANG PATUT KEPADA ORANG-ORANG TUA KITA YANG MASIH LENA DAN LEKA DENGAN LAMBANG DACING SUPAYA SEMASA PILIHANRAYA YANG AKAN DATANG, JANGAN PANGKAH LAGI LAMBANG DACING…”KALAU PANGKAH DACING BERMAKNA KITA BERSEKONGKOL DENGAN SAITAN”

    MAJU ANAK BARAM

  6. Saya percaya kita yg menetap disepanjang sungai Telang Usan amnya tidak beranggapan dengan pembinaan Empangan Baram adalah satu pemberian dpd TUHAN. Firman Tuhan ada mengatakan kasihilah sesamamu manusia & alam seisi dunia. Jelas sekali disini bahawa Tuhan tak ingin kita membinasakan alam ciptaanNya.

  9. All natural living things are gifts from God. Thus thou shalt not put Baram River to the test with such hdyro-power project. Many of this hydro-power had failed and dare you now proclaimed and testify this Baram Dam a gift from GOD? Our state natural eco-system have had been very much disturbed and even destroyed yet again someone came to the liking of tapping from the water course. Is there no other better alternative such as using the wind turbines. May be Lihan is another doomsday econimist; no roads for there is no hydro project. Whenever new roads are built and linked to any interior villages there would definitely the seeing of new off-springs settled along the new roads. There you will witness the socio economic lives. Building a dam at unspecified costs PLUS the RM500m roads will again putting a big castrophe on our poor rural kampong folks. The RM20m allocation could not even move the perimeter survey works. Would you believe the sum can move the mountain? The greatest fear among the poor people will the abandonment and forfeiture of their ancestral NCR lands where they rely solely on for farming, hunting ground, tree and herbal crops as their daily activities. Worst, the project failure could however be anticipated leaving the poor people hopeless at the end. How does he justify his RM500m on construction of the roads. Will sum first for the timber tracks and thereafter resurfacing them for as the State built roads! Think before you leap and let no our innocent rural folks be trapped into the DAMN hole.

  13. Upgrading Lapok road start and will cost ‘another’ 101 million?

What happen to the earlier fund/money that been allocated to upgrade this road for the past 25 years? Where the gomen spend those fund????????

The construction of the Sg Teru bridge taking 20 years…..dont how many contractors so far…and the current contractor been on the project for the past…3 years??

Building road to Long Kaseh? The timber company build the road(or there road already)…..why gomen has to spend monye again….since the timber company had been extracting timbers from these area…..they should build and maintain the road for free!!!!!

  14. Perhaps Lihan thinks Taib is God. This road is only marginally beneficial to the ordinary rakyat and will benefit the timber robber barons more. Is that what the people want? The dam, which we don’t need and which the people will also have to pay for, is only an excuse for Taib, his family & cronies to sapu all the remaining timber in the area. Then they will take the remaining land for plantations.

    Comment by Sarawak Headhunter — September 13, 2010 @ 9:49 AM | Reply

    • Hey Hunter,

The road is OK! We can do ethically sustainable forestry and tie physical development to proceeds therefrom. Perhaps socio-cultural development, too. The EIA done on the place has been silent on the animal kingdom destroyed in the area, which population would have been good for science, education and tourism.

There’s hosts and hosts of other things that could be done. That megalomaniac Taib just has got a big black hole is his stomache!

    • Yes TAIB is GOD to the Orang Ulu as preached by Lihan Jok and if the Orang Ulu were convinced and decided to venerate and glorify Taib by voting for BN.

  15. With the timber concession licenses belonging to his family and PBB, the dam will justify the joker and his people clear-log Ulu Baram.

The dam is surely a gift for him and PBB.

    • What gift? That’s CURI ler! He helps Taib rape all the orang ulu ! Unable to tell what curi is he appears bereft of what his God is! Sold his God cheap – a real feudal orang hutan! Mosques, Churches, temples in Malaysia worship these duds and fakes! Of course there are exceptions but they’re too few and far between. The Sibu Churches in the recent Sibu By Election is an example! The ill proponents of the Penang mosques khatib incident is another.

Maybe one day soon, this dud willwonder where he “heard this wind before, change like this to a deeper roar” !

God! What a dumb thing to say! I can build you another road for RM499,999,999 and give you RM0.01 sen and save us all RM7.0 billion. That’s what you’re bloody worth – 1 sen!

    Bloody shit head!
