Umno’s Cow Dung, No wonder fall in graft index

Umno, police seen in huge NFC cover-up: No wonder fall in graft index, says PKR

Melissa Lee

In what appears to be shaping up to be a massive Umno cover-up, Deputy Inspector General of Police Khalid Bakar insists that investigations have so far not revealed any element of corruption in the RM250million NFC debacle.

Khalid was seen to be doing “Umno-putra service” by suddenly making the comment that critics said was meant to assure Umno members  that Women’s Chief Shahrizat Jalil and her family were innocent of any graft in the cattle livestock project.

Khalid’s remarks and Umno’s strident defense of Shahrizat comes smack in the face of another sharp decline in the internationally-followed Corruption Perception Index. Malaysia fell to 60th position from 56 last year, and the result marked the third straight year of worsening on the widely-followed graft index.

“It is suspicious that on all days, Khalid would choose to reveal the progress of the police investigation on NFC today when the Umno AGM goes into full swing. It shows that Umno is still abusing the institutions especially the police to do their dirty work for them,” PKR vice president Tian Chua toldMalaysia Chronicle.

Umno, police seen in huge NFC cover-up: No wonder fall in graft index, says PKR“As for the CPI, it is a real warning. Umno is dragging down the country. It is the source of the greatest corruption and its refusal to admit it and put a stop to it will bankrupt us all. It is not the Pakatan, as Muhyiddin claims, which is trying to accuse the BN of wrongdoing. The CPI results speak for themselves. The index is is managed by Transparency International, which is a well established organization.

“But to the Umno elite, there is corruption everywhere except in their party. Malaysians especially Malays must reject this sort of mentality and they must reject Umno for their own sakes. Till now, Umno defends Shahrizat and uses the police to make excuses for them and then lie to everyone that they are not guilty. It just shows how corrupt and immoral they have become.”

74 people interviewed

According to Khalid, the police have so far interviewed over 74 people in connection with the probe, including Shahrizat’s family although she herself has not been asked to give a statement.

“However, we are still continuing our investigation into the issue and will call the minister to record her statement if the need arises,” said Khalid.

The project was awarded to Sharizat’s husband and children in 2006 and the Auditor-General has warned that the project was in a “mess” and could downspiral even further. Shahrizat has denied any involvement in the scandal, saying NFC had “nothing to do with me” although few Malaysians would ever believe her family – which has no track record in cattle breeding – could have won the project without her influence.

PKR leaders have led the charge on NFC, which was launched to enable everyday Malaysians to buy beef at affordable prices. However, a shocking trail of revelations show that instead of using the RM250 million soft loan to set up satellite cattle farms and structure an effective distribution and supply chain, Shahrizat’s family allegedly bought two super luxury condos in Bangsar for RM6.9 million each, gave a RM3 million discount to a family-own firm, bought a Mercedes CLS350 and residential land in Putrajaya worth some RM3.3 million, channeled half a million ringgit to a family firm in Singapore, as well as paid huge sums to a tour agency for alleged family holidays.

Shahrizat’s husbang Salleh Ibrahim has not denied the transactions occured, but insisted there was no corruption and that all the deals had the approval of NFC. However, critics point out that it did not make sense for a pilot livestock breeding project to plumb for plush condos, a super-high-end Merc and upmarket residential land – not mention why were discounts given and holidays charged to public money.

Resisting the reality with more lies

Top Umno leaders have refused to acknowlede any wrongdoing in NFC despite growing public anger as several of them were involved. For example, Muhyiddin Yassin, the Umno deputy president, had been the Agriculture minister who approved the tender to Shahrizat’s family in 2006.

Najib, who was then deputy prime minister, also had a hand in approving the deal, while Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin has been accused of masterminding the plan to give Shahrziat and family a financial lifeline. Khairy had in 2006 been regarded as the country’s de-facto PM, as his father-in-law, ex-premier  Abdullah Badawi, was in power at that time and Badawi was known to have a soft spot for Shahrizat.

Instead, the Umno leaders have accused Pakatan of trumping up the allegation for political mileage although the condo purchases, plus Merc, residential land and so forth have yet to be denied by NFC or the police.

“With Pakatan, it’s always like this, there is nothing new, even if you do good they attack you, they will find a reason to, just like social media sites who are against us, like yourself,” said Muhyiddin in response to a question on the matter on Thursday.

  4. The more we highlight the list of abuses, theft of funds, etc, the more popular UMNO becomes. It means that all these delegates are still in with a chance to do with the likes of Shahrizat has done – give the family some project of national importance, and then distance yourself from it when the sh!t hits the fan.

    • And yet Muhyiddin said, NFC is Pakatan’s politics. Even an idiot can tell it’s not but the pervasive nature of corruption. cronyism and nepotism that have been embedded in Umno’s tradition and culture. How pathetic Muhyiddin can be in brushing aside the issue, nevermind about him leading Umno and the country.

    • The cowdominium project plus cow fattening lodge is one of Idris Jala’s Pemandu “High Impact” transformation projects which re-transformed into a “deep impact”.

Pemandu’s attempt to justify the lower score is so pathetic. if a new criteria had been introduced causing a bias, the same bias would apply to all countries in the ranking. Just accept the hard fact that the ruling government allows mega scale corruptions

  6. The silly Cow-woman drama was no doubt a diversion to cover up her guilty conscience but it did more harm than good for her! She is finished, has to be, otherwise the whole party will go down with her.

Any further excessive actions and impulsive reactions will only prove harmful for Umno and they know it’s best to plug their holes and behave!

    • In what seemed to be a scandalous misuse of public funds, the world scientific community has lauded the discovery of a new method of breeding premium grade cattle. The beef is now very much sought after, even surpassing that of the beer drinking Japanese cattle.
The secret lies in breeding the cattle in 5-star, luxury condominiums. A businessman (who has never had any experience in cattle breeding) and his two sons stumbled upon this discovery after buying two luxury condominiums in the elite Bangsar and housing a herd of cattle in them (much to the dismay of expatriate neighbors). The purchase was made using public funds meant for a national feedlot project.
The government is now assessing the purchase of additional 5-star condominiums to further expand the project and possibly buying over complete blocks of luxury condominiums in the KLCC area. It is believed that the more expensive the condominiums, the better grade of cattle it will yield.
The businessman and his family have since been nominated by the government and are in the running to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Scientific Discovery of the century.

  7. China executes corrupt Hangzhou and Suzhou officials !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    BBC News, 19 July 2011

China has executed two officials from eastern cities after convicting them of corruption.

Xu Maiyong, a former vice-mayor of Hangzhou, and Jiang Renjie, who was vice-mayor of Suzhou, were put to death after their appeals were rejected.

Officials said Xu and Jiang took almost 300m yuan ($46m; £29m) by embezzling and taking bribes.

Corruption is one of the main causes of public discontent in China. Hundreds of officials are convicted every year.

But only a handful are executed, and it is extremely rare for two officials to be put to death on the same day.

Xu was said to be well known for his extravagant lifestyle – reports said investigators found gold bullion and expensive jewellery at his home.

State-run Xinhua news agency reported that he used his power to interfere with project contracts and to help companies and people obtain land, promotions and tax breaks.

The 52-year-old was sentenced to death in May for taking almost 200m yuan in bribes and embezzled funds.

Jiang, 62, was given the death penalty in 2008 for taking more than 100m yuan in bribes.

The two cases are not linked, but both men were earlier reported to be members of the Communist Party.

Earlier this year, President Hu Jintao focused on corruption during his main speech to celebrate 90 years since the party was founded.

He warned that corruption could cost the party the support of the people.

Several high-profile officials have been executed in recent years – including Shanghai’s former party boss, and a former head of the country’s main nuclear firm.

Dr M promotes China Communist model as alternative to democracy !!!!!!!!!!!!
By Yow Hong Chieh, The Malaysian Insider, 26 April 2011

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 18 — Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad today called democracy a “failed” ideology and held up China’s model of authoritarianism as an alternative “worth studying”.

He said China’s political model — which he termed the “Beijing Consensus” — showed that a nation could develop well even in the absence of freedom, liberty and equality — ideals fundamental to the rival “Washington Consensus”.

“The Beijing Consensus shows that having a non-democratic country can also give a good life for the people,” Dr Mahathir told delegates at the “Creation of the Global Citizen: Media Liberalisation and the New Political Realities” forum organised by Umno here.

“If you find good people to run a country, even dictators can make a country develop and develop very well.”

He pointed out that China’s “correct” application of the Beijing Consensus had allowed the nation of 1.3 billion “very poor” people to become the second richest country in the world.

The former premier also criticised the very premise of democracy, arguing that no issue could achieve total consensus, leading to an electoral split that will promote poor governance.

“Democracy… has failed in many countries,” he said.

“It is not the perfect thing it is touted to be. You find that some of these democracies really cannot work. People cannot make up their minds.

Dr Mahathir cited hung parliaments in Britain and Australia as proof that countries cannot progress when a majority of its voters cannot make up their minds, saying frequent changes in leadership were not good for a nation.

“We see a lot of democracies where leaders change every two years and the country cannot make any progress at all,” he said.

“Even the countries that have made progress find sometimes that democracies hinder the development of the country, make the country unstable and difficult to develop.”

He added that smaller parties roped into ad hoc coalitions to break hung parliaments in democracies will hold the majority hostage to minority demands that were not good for the country as a whole.
