Najib miscalculates with his guessing game

Selena Tay

Can it be said that Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak plans to delay the dissolution of Parliament, thus effectively delaying holding the 13th general election?
Is there a plan to delay the general election? All things certainly seem to point to that direction.

The dateline is approaching near and Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak is desperate as he knows that the rakyat is waiting anxiously for the polls to be held.

Despite his rhetoric that “everyone has gone back to Barisan Nasional”, he has not displayed any sense of urgency in holding the polls at all.

Instead, he has told the rakyat “to keep on guessing” and people are guessing that it looks like he wants to delay calling for the general election.

His game in polls-delaying can definitely be read by the more intelligent among us.

As this coming April 28 is the date of the automatic dissolution of Parliament, the 13th general election should be held within 60 days as permitted under the Federal Constitution.

Holding the polls after April 28 is, however, not ideal because once Parliament is dissolved, BN is only a caretaker government.

Investors will lose confidence and this has nothing to do with Pakatan Rakyat.

As it is now, due to the crisis in Lahad Datu-Semporna in Sabah, it will be impossible to hold the general election this month, meaning that Najib has nearly used up the full tenure by hanging on to the coat-tails of former prime minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi’s mandate.

However, this columnist is very confident that Malaysia’s armed forces is well-equipped and intelligent enough to put an end to the crisis happening in the east coast of Sabah and therefore Malaysians will be able to go to the polls in April.

The courage and fortitude of our armed forces should be commended and we should pray that there should be no more loss of lives.

Najib, too, should make a beeline to go to Ground Zero on a regular basis to assess the situation as he is the prime minister.

The polling date

Of course, this is being long-winded but a time-frame ought to be spelt out clearly for him to hold the general election and here in FMT, this columnist is telling him that he should do it this way:

1. March 28: dissolve Parliament, and

2. April 21: polling for the 13th general election.

After all, the prime minister is still a public servant and should listen to the voice of the people.

This is so that he knows what the rakyat expects of him. He has said that he wants to listen to the pulse of the nation and so this is it.

He must not forget that it was he who had made the statement that “the era the government knows best is over”. Therefore this write-up serves to remind him of this past statement of his.

There should be no more polls delay as many political analysts since early last year have predicted that BN will win the 13th general election, with some saying that regaining the two-thirds parliamentary majority is not impossible.

With such favourable prognosis, it certainly makes one wonder why the general election has yet to be called as the Malays and Indians have been widely acclaimed by BN leaders to be on BN’s side now.

A local English daily in its report on March 4 had two stories under these titles: “40 former members of PAS, PKR join Umno” and “121 fed-up Selangor residents join MIC”.

Of course, people leaving BN to join Pakatan will never be reported in the mainstream media.

“The prime minister talks big but it is all a stage show. Otherwise, why has the polls been delayed since April 2011? I recall that there was previous talk that the 13th general election would be held simultaneously with the Sarawak state election held at that time but it all came to nothing thus effectively making Najib out to be a paper man talking paper words,” said Nizar Jamaluddin of PAS, the state assemblyman for Pasir Panjang in Perak.

This only goes to show that the Chinese proverb is very true: “If one takes a long time in doing something, it means that he will not be doing it.”

Currently the Lahad Datu-Semporna problem is proving to be a worry to all Malaysians, especially Sabahans.

Fancy slogans

Therefore Najib has miscalculated his political move.

He had planned to delay the polls to annoy and tire Pakatan so that Pakatan leaders will lose focus, but the long delay has resulted in this sudden crisis cropping up and now the polls will be further delayed, thus giving him a bad impression all round.

Where is the effectiveness of his GTP (Government Transformation Programme) in all this?

Najib should now wake up fast and try to redeem himself by striving to be the image that he has created for himself. This is year 2013 and not the 1960s or 1970s and he must realise that he cannot dupe the citizens with fancy slogans and multiple abbreviations.

Said a political analyst who is a friend of this columnist, “In many instances, Najib applies the ‘Blue Ocean Strategy’ instead of Sun Tzu’s ‘Art Of War’ principles. He fails to suit the strategy to the situation thus displaying his lack of sharpness in political warfare as well as military warfare.”

Are most Malaysians intelligent enough to read his game? Or only a minority can see through his ploy?

Will it be too late by the time the 13th general election is held? The year of the Water Snake seems to be ominous and this is only early March.

  1. The Kuala Lumpur Hospital has banned its staff from pasting opposition stickers or displaying its flags on their vehicles.

May we ask since when has Kuala Lumpur Hospital became a component of BN? May Kuala Lumpur Hospital make a stand if they will accept Oppostion leaders, members and supporters as patients?

  2. With unfortunate casualties suffered from both sides, I hope Umno will not try to politisize the situation by organising a rousing welcome for Najib when he feels safe to visit Lahad Datu in the days to come. Any fanfare will be seen in bad light especially to families who are still mourning the death of their beloved who had responded to national duty to protect Sabah and its people.

    • Even when families are mourning the death of their loved ones who were killed in the shootouts with militants from Sulu, Umno in Sabah is still looking for ways to capitalise on the assault by the military and police against the intruders in Lahad Datu to boost its chances of winning more votes in GE13.

The remark by Sabah BN secretary, Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan, who said Sabahans have been sharing their gratitude and relief towards the government’s latest security measures and is thankful to BN government for the sacrifices and services.,is most disgusting.

Winning an election is not everything and the only thing but to Umno its is. Even in time of sorrow, Umno is seeking to score political points when praises should be heaped on our brave soldiers and police despite a tactical delay by certain quarters to deal with the crisis decisively and swiftly.

Sabahans must stay united and give Umno led BN the boot.

      • Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan, the sacrifices and loss of life of our soldiers and police should not be turned into a BN government sacrifices and services. UMNO and BN did not care at all so long as it wants to win an election by default, by any means and at all cost at the expense of the rakyat and now even at the expense of our armies and police.

I urge our police and armies to view Datuk Abdul Dahlan’s press statement as a blatant disrespect for our security forces and especially our fallen heroes who sacrificed their lives to ensure the safety and security of Malaysians in Sabah.

  4. ALLEGATION THAT NAJIB PROMISED TO SETTLE SULUS IN SABAH- LED TO “INVASION”?

    “WE ARE ALL BROTHERS”

Don’t Harm Sultan’s Men, Nur Warns Malaysia
    By Edd K. Usman
    February 21, 2013, 8:03pm

MANILA, Philippines — Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) founding Chairman Nur Misuari yesterday appealed to Malaysia to settle the Sabah standoff peacefully and warned that his group will come to the aid of Sultan Jamalul Kiram III’s followers if blood spills.

“I hope they will not harm them. They (Kiram’s followers) are our brothers. If one drop of their blood is spilled, we might be forced to come to their aid,” Misuari said.

“Please don’t touch them, give them a friendly and brotherly treatment,” Misuari appealed.

Misuari was in Zamboanga City yesterday for the MNLF leadership meeting, which he said was attended by some 2,000 leaders from across Mindanao to discuss various issues facing the Bangsamoro people.

When he was in Jolo, Sulu, over the week, Misuari said that what he heard was that the group of the Crown Prince Rajah Muda Agbimuddin Kiram, younger brother of Kiram, crossed the sea to the island because they were allegedly promised to be settled in Sabah by Prime Minister Dato Seri Haji Mohammad Najib bin Tun Haji Addul Razak.

Misuari appealed to the prime minister to exercise prudence in dealing with the people of the sultan.

    —————————————————————————————————————————————————————————

The above news report carried an allegation that PM Najib made a promise to settle Sulus in Sabah. Nur Misuari the MNLF leader said the Sulus crossed the sea on this promise.

So Najib is in a way the direct cause of the Sabah Standoff and military chaos now in progress in Eastern Sabah claimed by the Sulus.

This is a very serious allegation.

Najib of Bugis descent has tried to present a public image of being very close the Southern Filipinos because of his blood ties. He proudly claimed that his ancestral home is in the Southern Philippines. He has paid a number of visits to the area which received much publicity.

Was all this just a charade to allay the Filipino claim on Sabah?

But if the allegation is true- we must ask by what authority did Najib have to make such a promise? Did he first ask the Sabah people or get his statement to be endorsed by Parliament?

Would Najib be brazen enough to make such a promise in the face of Sabahans’ anger over the UMNO engineering of transmigration illegals into Sabah to corrupt elections and democracy.

A person can be proud of his or her ancestry but their first and primary loyalty is to their country in international relations.

Has he confused territorial integrity with blood ties and brotherhood?

Further if this were true why did Najib compromised Sabah’s security with such promise? The Sulus sailed into Sabah armed to the teeth to stake a claim on Sabah and according to Nur Misuari – this was because of Najib’s “promise”.

The illegals already outnumber real Sabahans two to one and a real Filipino take over of Sabah can happen in just a matter of time.

    Thanks to UMNO!

  5. According to UMNO strategists, the Indian and Chinese supports have gone back to BN, the women and youths as well and Sabah and Sarawak remained strong fixed deposit and all these had been double confirmed by leaders of the other components BUT why is Najib still delaying and feeling jittery about going to the poll or more specifically seeking a mandate from all Malaysians? Is it because the Special Branch had already knew UMNO controlled BN would be defeated badly despite all the propaganda, spins and more lies?

    • Now Najib will use the incident in Lahad Datu to trumpet that only BN can protect the people of Sabah at the expense of our security forces.

      • My ass, this incident show BN/UMNO are just taking care of themselves . WTF do they care are Sabah and Sarawak. Just imagine how a group of Armed Militants can come into Malaysia undetected. Yet PM spent so much money to buy military equipments.
