Squattersgate :They Look At Us Like Kings?

Sarawak Report

MP Norah Abdul Rahman’s nephew being trained to think he is a King of the poor – Norlia’s son hands out Ang Pow to the poor kids in Tanjung Manis.

The people of Sarawak are still digesting the arrogance of the Abdul Rahman sisters, revealed in the Global Witness expose on the land grabs this week.

Two of the eight sisters, who own companies given NCR land by their cousin the Chief Minister, explained in a secretly recorded interview how they consider their relationship with the “very, very poor” people of Sarawak.

“You know they are very very poor and when leaders come they look at leaders like their kings and they always expect some handouts”,

said the extremely well-fed Fatimah Abdul Rahman who is the contact for Ample Agro Sdn Bhd, a company given 5,000 hectares of land in Julau.

As if this was not patronising enough, consider the comments of the eldest sister Norlia, who was introduced as the person “who looks after the [Tanjung Manis] constituency” for yet another sister, the MP Nora Abul Rahman.

Norlia’s sense of entitlement to land sneaked to her by Taib Mahmud

“They are actually squatters on the land because the land doesn’t belong to them it’s the government land, so they’re squatting”

said Norlia, who seems to think it is quite right that traditional people should be forced off their traditional land, while she and her wealthy sisters have some kind of entitlement to it instead. Because they are ‘Kings’?  Even the real White Rajahs of Sarawak’s past took care not to turf the local people from their homelands.

See how the guards stand to attention and umbrellas are held over our heads, little ‘King’?

The shocking remarks have prompted insiders to send us pictures of the Rahman sisters acting out their sense of ‘kingship” in Tanjung Manis, one of the last mangrove regions in Sarawak, which another of their companies has been stripping bare in their drive to turn it into a “Halal Hub”.

MP Nora Abdul Rahman is seen acting lady bountiful in this cripplingly poor region and teaching her nephew, Norlia’s son to hand out Ang Pow to less fortunate local children.

Now everyone has learnt their place?

The sisters’ sense of entitlement seems to come from the fact they think their family is something special, Royal even.  But they are not.  Their father was a lawyer who managed to become an elected politician and who promoted their cousin Taib another lawyer to get elected too.  They have no entitlement to anything.

Remember we are a Royal Family here in Tanjung Manis?

As for the land, which their cousin, Chief Minister Taib Mahmud “handed” to them using his position of trust as leader of the State Government. Such favours are of course blatant corruption, public theft and abuse of public office.

However, it is clear the sisters think that they are entitled merely because of their luck in being related to rapacious Taib, whereas the people protesting about the loss of the lands they live from are “naughty”.

“You know they are pretty naughty people.  They try to make money, the moment they hear (they have people in the Land and Survey Department who tell them look this land has been given, has been titled to this company to do oil palm or what not) they plant themselves there” [Fatimah Abdul Rahman]

The sisters are clearly angry that appalled workers in Land and Survey are warning Dayaks that their traditional lands have been assigned to relatives of Taib like them, because they have their rights under the law.

In a clear breach of duty the Abdul Rahman sisters would prefer to keep the transactions secret, so they can sell at a profit before the local people even know their land has been taken.

They are very very poor you know

Fatimah openly admits her uncle is corrupt in the film. And she justifies it merely by assuming that everyone else in a position of leadership in the world is corrupt as well.

“I know people are talking about him being corrupted and all, but who isn’t in this world when they are leaders? (laughs)”

Development? – a community toilet in Norah’s constituency Tanjung Manis

This is presumably a reference to all the BN politicians she knows in Malaysia.  With that lot as her reference point Fatimah clearly knows no better.

But, in fact most other countries punish such personal corruption by ministers with severe measures.  Generally, only backward dictatorships have leaders who get away with the same open corruption as BN.

But Fatimah even goes on to justify Taib’s corruption in the light of the “good” he has done for the state:

“I’m not making any excuses you know, but if you look at the good he [Taib] has done for the state it outweighs all the things that people have said about him”.  [Inside Malaysia’s Shadow State]

It is these remarks that have prompted readers to send in some sample pictures of the acknowledged poverty of the people of Tanjung Manis, where sister Norah is MP.

He has done so much for the State? – a home in Tanjung Manis.

This is the region that the family are stripping bare with their companies.  Grabbing the precious mangrove woods and setting up factories and ports which are benefitting from huge sums of money injected from public funds by the Chief Minister.

The familiar pattern where the state pays to set up the enterprises and then the family of Taib Mahmud are there as the owners of these enterprises to rake off the profits is being played out once more to the benefit of the Abdul Rahman family over in Tanjung Manis.

This is why Taib can count on the extreme loyalty of his MP there, his cousin Norah Abdul Rahman.

It is also why it is nonsense for the Chief Minister to try to get off the hook by saying that the sisters were acting to “frame” him in the film.  The girls were just indiscreet towards the man they thought would buy their land.

The Abdul Rahman sisters would never want to damage Taib when they are doing so well out of their family’s rampage of plunder in Sarawak.

  2. That’s strange. The ‘Ali Sujang’ I know is a very shrewd successful businessman who is very pro the current Taib Administration. Infact, he should be good buddies with Norlia, etc.

  3. Najib has been rushing to give out mega projects to close cronies in a negotiated bid in return for 20% donation to Umno’s coffer as the clock is clicking closer to dissolving parliament.

  4. The recent case of the police falsifying the police report of an Iban NCR activist, resulting in the culprit or criminal walking free after bashing him up must not be swept under the carpet by BN. Dayaks do not deserved to be beaten up just because we were supposed to be subservient to the authority who had given our land away to their cronies.

  5. When will all politicians learn that the public hate it when they bring their wife and especially their children to public functions? Public only expect this from royalties not from public SERVANTS. We elect only the candidate (not the wife/husband and children).

  6. BN has wanted the naive and ignorant rural voters to remain poor and subservient to its political system and culture of giving out cash and goodies before an election and nothing more. Many natives were even displaced and misplaced by greedy politicians who are beholden to the thief minister Taib Mahmud.

  7. NO ADVANTAGE FOR SABAH SARAWAK IN MALAYSIA FOR ANOTHER 50 YEARS

Sarawak like Sabah were sucked into Malaysia with British Malayan justifications that they would benefit from this federation as it would provide “security from foreign invasion and prosperity”.

This year is the 50th anniversary of this new colonisation under Malayan rule and the grinding poverty conditions in both colonies and the Sulu invasion of Sabah illustrate how little have been achieved by way security and prosperity despite Malayan sworn promises.

    1. The reality is that as far as prosperity is concerned UMNO had from the beginning ignored any “equal partnership” idea and torn up the 18/20 Points Agreement and embarked on its Melayu Raya Apartheid agenda and re-colonised the 2 colonies and began an unprecedented pillage of their resources overshadowing the previous colonial plunder. It was no wonder that both countries became the poorest “states” of Malaysia.

    2. The second branch of their justification for forming Malaysia was also compromised by UMNO from the beginning when it began to sponsor insurgent movements in the Southern Philippines to de-stabilise that country to counter the Philippines Sabah claim.

So from the start the UMNO created Malaysia never lived up to these justifications.

UMNO’s belated response to the Sulu invasion and claim is now being used to dramatise how important it is for Sabah and Sarawak to choose to remain in Malaysia rather than the alternative of being incorporated into the Philippines. This is “no choice” choice.

This is the point which the Dayaks Kadazandunsuns and all the people of Sabah and Sarawak must reject and see for themselves that they still have the choice and inalienable right to chose self-determination in their own independent states outside Malaysia like Brunei and Singapore.

The right to self-determination and national independence is enshrined as a UN principle of human rights.

It is of the greatest importance that on the 50th year of Malaysia that all we Sabahans and Sarawakians seriously question whether Malaysia has ever been relevant to Sabah and Sarawak and look at the obvious alternative solution.

If we cannot answer this question we need only look at the examples of Brunei and Singapore both intended to be original components of Malaysia.

Brunei made the wise decision not to be a part of Malaysia. Singapore had the choice to leave Malaysia. This changed the original Malaysia concept as proposed by Britain and Malaya. (Any way why should we be asked to become part of another country? Does it make sense?)

MALAYSIA WAS THEREFORE NOT A COMPULSORY ASSOCIATION. IT WAS MEANT TO BE FREE AND VOLUNTARY.

That is why they conducted a bogus Cobbold Commission of Enquiry on whether the Borneo people supported their Malaysia proposal and used the “findings” to legitimise formation of Malaysia. It was a one way proposal dictated to Sabah and Sarawak.

If becoming part of Malaysia was a voluntary act, then the people must wake up and assert their right to independence by taking their countries out of Malaysia.

Brunei and Singapore are shining examples of how not being in Malaysia has ensured their own security and prosperity as independent countries.

This is the only sensible thing to do or otherwise they can look forward to 50 more years of foreign domination and plunder.

That is why we must all unite and take back our countries and become master of our own destiny!

  9. Let me remind Tun Abdul Rahman Yaakub’s daughters that the Ibans or orang ulus as well as other ethnic races are not squatters. They are the sole owners of the beautiful land of Sarawak. In the olden days prior to Brunei Sultanate’s rule or even later under the rule of James Brooke in 1841, there is no justifiable evidence to suggest that their ancestors were of immigrant lots. There were no questions of state land or NCR at that time in history. That particular time in history reveals to us that Sarawak was divided and ruled by tribal chiefs according to ethnic groups. They had the total rights over their territoriies and the lands within. You are rich now because of land graps with the help of your thief cousin.

So then, who are those yaakub’s morons to categorise them as squatters. Your immediate ancestors were very poor then. You are rich now because of landgrabs with the help of your thief cousin?

  12. Why must poor Sarawakian villagers be made to stand in lines to receive handouts and angpows from the young son of a BN MP? This is sheer arrogance which all BN MPs must condemned if ever they have any conscience left in them. BN MPs are treating the rural poor like beggars or even slaves. This sad and pathetic situation must be stopped. The rural poor must fight back to regain their self esteem and dignity. Radio Free Sarawak must educate our rural poor to stand tall and fight back and never to be poor because of BN’s design.

  14. The arrogance of it all. They have no shame, no conscience and certainly no compassion. They think the people are their slaves. “Keep them poor and they will worship us like kings” is their motto. As a voter and a Sarawakian, the first thing I want the new PR government to do is to call for a royal commission to dig deep into the BN leaders abuse of power and to put those who are found guilty to face the law. No mercy should be shown and if need be, let them rot in jail for the rest of their life.

  15. Norah Abdul Rahman is afterall the sister in law of Najib Tun Razak. She must have aspired to be the first woman thief minister for Sarawak and in Malaysia while her sister in law, the ugly fat mama who installed herself as the first lady of Malaysia is also a business partner in SCORE involving UBG (Utama Banking Group), Mubadala Development Company, 1MDB and Aabar Investments PJS. Among the poors they are kings, handing out angpows , KFC and whatnot.
