Opposition elites fight to the death – of the Rakyat

“When rich people fight wars with one another, poor people are the ones to die.” so said Jean-Paul Sartre, the French philosopher, playwright, novelist, screenwriter, political activist, biographer, and literary critic. Wikipedia has a write-up of the Frenchman, and it is worth some attention.

Take that statement and fast-forward to today’s Malaysia (not just Malaysia Today), and then rewind a little to put it into the context of Malaysian political history. To me, there is much similarlity indeed between what the Frenchman said, with blogger Raja Petra Kamarudin’s New Year’s Day assault on Pakatan Rakyat.

Critical historians can probably remind us how the elites’ tussles for power throughout Malayan history, and also before and immediately after the formation of Malaysia, played out. History can relate how many struggling Malaysians died due to the elites’ feud. Oh yes, I forget: mainstream historians tell us those who died in battle were not struggling poor people, but “baby-eating” commies, with guns and explosives, the devil incarnate, supposedly.

Then fast forward Malaysian history – perhaps it is more appropriate to term it UMNO’s or Malaya’s history – to the Mahathir era in 1987. When authoritarian Mahathir was first threatened by the Kelantan prince, Tengku Razaleigh, for the prized and lucrative Prime Minister’s post, it was the first “modern day” Malaysian elites’ fight. Bear in mind that the top government post, in the Malaysian context, is lucrative not just for one’s own self, but for an entire empire-building industry.

There is more than enough documentation regarding those who suffered under political detention in that 1980s elitist struggle.

Advance now to 1997, again, “coincidentally” as in 1987, during yet another cycle of economic collapse, we had another elites’ fight. Mahathir, a practised dictator by then, was having to fend off another assault on his Prime Ministerial post and the treasure associated with the PM package, as perfected by King Mahathir.

It is well known that Anwar Ibrahim, a rising political star within UMNO, was the “victim” in this elitist fight. He was imprisoned and received a black eye from the highest-ranking police officer, the Inspector General of Police. But Anwar was not the only victim.

This time round, in 1997, the victims would again be the ordinary Malaysians, the working class and the proletariat, who had to suffer through another episode of Malaysian elites’ fight.

Opposition Elites also do battle

Of course history is never discriminatory, in only recording the ruling front’s elite battles. The Malaysian opposition politicians too, after all, are elites in our society. Since the birth of Pakatan Rakyat (PR), it has been an open secret who the elites are, with the exception of a few of those politicians with strong community-centred ideological foundations,

There are plenty of examples of the kind of suffering among the ordinary Rakyat, when elites fight within the opposition. Before one jumps into saying opposition elites’ fights do not produce any deaths among the poor, think again.

The elites’ battles left the poor under continuing oppression and suppression, and left them to be denigrated, and termed the ‘poor’ (in fact, in the Malaysian context, it is not enough to be ‘poor,’ but we have even created another category of “hardcore” poor, so that this last category of Malaysians – neglected Malays, Indians, Chinese, Dayaks, Kadazan Dusuns and “lain-lain” – are left to die young).

The opposition elites’ fight became more feverish after March 2008. Opposition numbers grew in and out of Parliament and State Legislatures in Malaya. Sarawak and Sabah elites had of course been fighting, long before Malaya were in any position to fight as they did after March 2008.

The latest battle lines

The controversial blogger, Raja Petra Kamarudin, or RPK, has now openly declared war on the opposition PR with his latest “interview” by the UMNO media group. His broadside has been picked up by various other online news portals.

As he expected, all sorts of insults and accusations have been thrown at him after his savaging of Anwar Ibrahim and the PR. RPK knows what he is doing. After TV3 had twisted the content of his previous interview in April 2011 from Australia, RPK had written about further attention by UMNO’s media. He had even named his terms and conditions before he would grant another interview to the UMNO media.

The fact that he agreed to participate in the latest round of propaganda in Singapore meansm apart from what the UMNO media had published, he has not been forthright.

Now Haris Ibrahim, president of the Malaysian Civil Liberties Movement (MCLM), a leader of the ‘Third Force’, has waded into battle too. He has resigned in protest at RPK’s hostility to PR.

Let’s return to what the Frenchman Sartre said. This time round, another prince, from Selangor, is now suddenly seen as, among many others, a tool of UMNO. Whether he is, or isn’t, is not relevant to the effects on the poor that the Frenchman expressed an interest in. The Frenchman only revealed what the consequences were to the poor, when the rich elites fought among themselves.

There are many ways for us to view the right and wrong ways (for the moralists) and the preferable ways (for the pragmatists) for RPK to behave. To the Malaysian poor, hardcore poor, or let’s just call them the marginalised, will they have a choice between life and death during this latest episode of the PR elitist fight? PR cetainly want the poor to come out and show their opposition to UMNO/BN, when Anwar Ibrahim’s show trial ends on January 9.

Will the majority of rural voters in Sarawak and Sabah, far away from the media and internet circus, whose Parliamentary seats comprise the swing vote, be the ones to suffer and die, as a result of the opposition elites’ squabbles?

The mighty UMNO proxy in Sarawak,, the BN under Chief Minister Taib Mahmud, is still sitting comfortably, awaiting an organised and united opposition to move the Dayak voters en masse.

Will the rural voters continue to be ‘practical’ voters and succumb to vote-buying as always? Can they avoid beicoming victims of the opposition elites’ internal struggles? Can these rural people afford the luxury of squabbling over the kind of issues that the opposition elites choose to fight over, when they face the most basic issue of survival?

A new chapter of Malaysian political history remains to be written by future generations. I suspect they will not be kind, to the opposition PR, the so-called Third Force, or the ruling BN.

  1. RPK LACKS CREDITBILITY

“The lack of credibility part comes from the fact that RPK has a habit, among others, of publishing Statutory Declarations & police reports verbatim as if they are the Gospel truth.

As a blogger, it would be okay if he publishes them with the warning that their contents have not been independently verified. Instead, he flogs the authorities with them.

No wonder he had to flee to England where he has citizenship. M’sian laws do not allow dual citizenship for men. He should be stripped of his M’sian citizenship since he can’t be extradited from England to stand trial. Anyone who has listened to RPK will know that he has been educated beyond his intelligence.

He does not come across as a reasonable person. That does not mean that those in authority are reasonable. But that’s another story. Even Hindraf avoids him like the plague.

RPK is in the same league as people who write that Elvis is still alive, John Kennedy is not dead, Michael Jackson’s coffin was empty etc etc ”

  3. APANG HAS MADE A REASONABLE COMMENT

Many of us were misled by the smooth talk of RPK who could so convincingly argue the case against UMNO and call for its overthrow.

During his speaking tour to Australia last year he had already started his move back to the “fold”.

He secretly went and gave an interview with the UMNO media about his affidavit on Rosmah and company. This was interpreted by many as a recantation.

The recent events seem to confirm this.

The trouble is that RPK convinced a host of sincere believers and got all their emails and comments. So what is he going to do with this information? Is this part of the bargain to return to the fold?

  4. This might be RPK’s 1st attempt to be the judge. Over the years many cases were overturned to favour the BN cronies after the appeals heard. What else more to say, even he himself, RPK now in exile to escape from the trial.

Come this 901 the game is quite certain the court will grant an interim favour to Anwar in order to disperse the proposed demonstration. It has to be aborted and dismiss immediately or else government controlled media agencies will be spying and ogling on PR every move. But the appeal is already on the card and will mention in the next chapter after the GE13.

Thus, not only the astrologers know how to hide the mentioning of the country parasitic position that dirty money is the contributing factor of the elite politicians to rule and control over the working class but we know even better; we must win this time, to stop corruptions we must vote out the filthy rich BN come GE13.

  7. Defiance has proven its worth

    Blockades against the bulldozers
The Penan of Long Kerong are aware of the value of their forests. The village is in the middle of a concession granted to Samling, a logging corporation with headquarters in the coastal city of Miri. When employees of the company tried to fell timber in their territory in 1996/97, the entire village turned to barricades. At first the Penan tried petitions and negotiations but Samling rejected all of them. A meeting between the elders and the logging company in August 1996 came to naught. Samling’s acting manager appeared at a second meeting with members of the ominous Police Field Force (PFF). But the villagers of Long Kerong were not about to be intimi-
dated. At the beginning of 1997, when Samling was once again advancing towards their village, the inhabitants blocked the logging road and stood in the way of the bulldozers in protest at the destruction of their lebensraum. This time the company appealed to the military for help. The use of special forces against the
blockade ended with fourteen injured and the arrest of four Penan on March 13, 1997. Nevertheless, the people of Long Kerong remained unyielding in their opposition until Samling fi nally with-drew and sent its bulldozers elsewhere. he 300 Penan of Long Kerong live in the middle of the rain- forest, 250 kilometers from the
    nearest city.

  9. Apang is over reacting to RPK’s self-indulgence.

Fighting the good fight in politics has to be led by the elites, by the definition. As with any human endeavour, many of the elites (on both sides of the political divide) are in it, not for the people and the issues they proclaim to champion – but for personal glory and enrichment.

During election time, the voters will need to decide on the basis of the individual AND the political parties they represent. It is never appropriate to vote PR solely on the basis of Buku Jingga and not on the integrity of the individual. There is no point in voting a rascal even if he is chosen by Lim Kit Siang himself.

Perhaps RPK is polishing his relationship with the UMNO elites, or perhaps he is merely exercising his right to critic individual PR personalities. Or perhaps he is just self-indulgent and gloating over his once-held position as the darling of the alternative media.

Whatever the case maybe, it is unwise to over-react to RPK and regard the political development in the country as the battle among the elites – leaving us proletariat, as sacrificial pawns. The rural poor acceptance of RM 50 per vote is already an act of political cynicism; there is no need to add fuel to the fire. Answer RPK charges head-on,by all means – but do so, with capitulating into cynicism.

    • Yes, he is when he says :

“Now Haris Ibrahim, president of the Malaysian Civil Liberties Movement (MCLM), a leader of the ‘Third Force’, has waded into battle too. He has resigned in protest at “RPK’s hostility to PR.”

He’s main criticism isn’t against reformasi. He has criticised Anwar in a big way and says he’s 90% sure. He should be big enough to say he’s not 100% sure.

Regardless, his intent on criticism this time on corruption in Selangor is valid. And Selangor CM office says he’s welcome to substantiate with facts at costs budgeted for in Selangor’s expenses. That’s fine. BN government has a huge organ called MACC and suspects kept falling out of MACC buildings!

What’s not fine is …he has been barred from reentry to Malaysia for the flimsiest of reason. He probably won’t get a fair day in Court.

So how “big” is PM Najib’s government? Big enough to let him return and fight corruption for Malaysia? When you speak of corruption you speak of all governments. There are so few, or hardly any, governments in the world which is free from corruption.

Let RPK return unimpeded and fight corruption for Malaysia – BN government or PR government.

Let him! Is PM Najib big enough for that? Or will he cower under the FLOM’s sarung?

      • ” …2. The MCLM will assist any political party that may be looking for candidates from amongst the civil society movement activists to field in the next general election… ” – Malaysia-today.net

There is one thing about RPK’s MCLM which might or not have any bearing on Haris Ibrahim’s reason to call it quits. But in any case the involvement of MCLM choosing candidates for ANY party sounds OK on the surface.

However, if BN or UMNO needs a “good” candidate, goes to MCLM they would find one and hand him/her over after all the scrutiny. Then what? Is the candidate a BN/UMNO member? Where would his/her loyalty lie? Malaysian politics as they are, this is suicidal. It is not clear what Haris Ibrahim’s opinion is on “party loyalty” vis-a-vis present Malaysia politics. If under the same condition a PR candidate were to stick to party loyalty because he’s a PR rep with party loyalty, it does not necessarily mean it will not be against voters, constituents wish or objective.

What complicates matters more is, MCLM will say it is out of their hands. Then the situation is riddled with constroversy!

The American Civil Liberties Union work on different basis and entirely non-political association helping and assisting citizens who have problems with government or institutions. It could be anyone needing help. They might, vis-a-vis “civil liberties” assist non citizens whose civil rights have been affected or infringed.

It does appear, RPK is setting up MCLM as a potentially controverted grouping. Or as some might allege, a big trojan machine! What’s worst, they can say they’re not involved after candidate identification. Absolutely, if the candidate so chosen acts like the kind of UMNO/BN party animal that we normally see, then you can accuse RPK as a, say “spy” for UMNO and BN or PR.

Then there’s the question of funding. On complete transparency donors must faithfully declare who they are. And Malaysia does not even have legislation on election donations!

  10. the journey to the truth is not easy, there are obstacles, stones, road blocks, parang, water tanks, cow heads, favours, etc.
    REMEMBER,
the light will always shine, even how dark the journey is.
i believe thru time, many rakyats, expecially the poor, being illusion to believe a certain truth which is only part-truth,
BUT as the times will tell the different.
the world is moving forward, and will the certain group still be able to use the people for its selfish destination?
i believe, the illusion and the half-truth will gone, and the light will shine thru out this land. is already too long, generation had come and gone.

stay focus and be at heart that this land will be free from illusion and return to the origin of man-kind !
