Taib was Mahathir’s personal banker

Awang Abdillah

During the Mahathir reign, Sarawak Chief Minister Taib Mahmud had a free reign and in return he contributed millions to ensure Mahathir’s victories.

What Chief Minister Taib Mahmud has been doing as the Sarawak state leader is contrary to the people’s true aspirations.

The projects and developments are mainly inter-connected with his politics of deception and money.

As such, these projects and developments are designed to keep him in power rather than for the well-being and betterment of the economy and people.

Let us examine how Taib’s ploys enable him to hold on to power:

Deception politics

Both former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Taib believe in the doctrine of deception.

Deception tactics involve make-believe propaganda and diversion of focus aimed at changing the mindset of the people in their favour.

Taib and Mahathir both have faith and trust in such a ploy that will produce the desired psychological effects, which is to convince the listeners through false information.

The two believe that if one continuously tells lies to someone, eventually the psyche of the listener will give way and accept them as true.

Furthermore to ordinary people, it is difficult for them to prove otherwise because the relevant information is not accessible to the general public.

However, there are many honest and intelligent people around who do not buy such stories outright but double-check or seek a second opinion.

Hence, the politics of exposure is necessary to counter-balance the evils of politics of deception.

Money politics

Taib has allocated substantial funds from the money he has accumulated over the years, for the following covert operations:

(a) To form power base:

For every state and general elections, Taib will ensure that all the Pesaka Bumiputra Bersatu (PBB) seats are won through money politics with the exception of a few genuine ones.

He provides sufficient funds to cover all the illegal and illicit political activities during a state election to ensure total victory, which then forms his political power base in the state.

With the biggest number of seats won among the component BN parties,Taib can then dictate his terms to them.

He and his party stalwarts have built a network of die-hard voters who number more than half of the total voters in each constituency.

They know each one of the voters in detail. You may say these voters are the “loyal business customers” during the elections.

These hardcore voters will vote for PBB candidates no matter who or what kind of candidates the party chooses.

This is the typical mentality of the die-hard voters in many PBB areas (not all).

So long as they receive the corrupt money plus other goodies and the candidate (whoever he is) is using the “dacing” symbol, then he is accepted.

They are already addicted to the election money and goodies and are willing to sell their votes to this regular distributor of the “haram” money.

We may compare the loyal supporters in the PBB constituencies to the drug addicts who have no moral values and independent thinking.

This is how the majority of PBB leaders train their people contrary to the true spirit of true democracy, the rule of law and human capital development.

This is unlike the Chinese voters who decide on their own independent rational thinking the choice of a candidate to be voted in.

Even the non-Malay Bumiputera voters (Iban, Bidayuh and Orang Ulu) in the rural areas are not as naïve as the Malay and Melanau voters.

The non-Malay Bumiputera voters have been betrayed by their own leaders who are cowed or bought over by Taib , and the federal government is in cahoots with Taib to threaten or deny them development projects if they choose the opposition like what had happened to Sabah under the opposition rule.

Personal ‘standby’ banker

(b) To feed the corrupt federal Umno leaders:

During the Mahathir reign, Taib had a field day. He was free to run the state on his terms as long as they shared the loot.

Taib paid millions to finance the Mahathir faction to ensure he would win in Umno party elections.

For the general election, Taib gave millions to Mahathir to ensure Umno-BN’s victories.

Furthermore, Taib acted as a standby personal banker to the ex-premier whenever he needed money for his sons or cronies’ business needs.

In return, Mahathir not only sanctioned Taib’s corrupt act, but would protect him and his gang of thieves from the long arm of the law.

Hence, for the last 30 years till today Taib continues to plunder the state resources without interference from the federal government.

The Sarawak people demand that Mahathir, the promoter and protector of Taib’ corrupt practices, own up to his role and to disclose how much Taib had paid him all these years.

This will explain why, despite hundreds of reports backed up by evidence against Taib, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission will not act simply because the thief is literally feeding the dog’s master.

By so doing, Taib successfully sealed his relationship with the elite Umno leaders and kept himself safe from the onslaught of the opposition in the state.

Taib fears a united Dayak

(c) To break up Dayak based parties:

In Sarawak politics no race has the absolute majority numbers in the State Legislative Assembly though the Dayak-based parties hold the biggest number.

PBB has been leading the state government since the 1970s, and hence it is wary of the SUPP and the Dayak parties uniting to form a government.

What Taib fears most is the Dayak parties merging as a single party that will pose a serious threat to his own party.

Hence, Taib is always on the look-out for any moves by the Dayak parties in that direction. From 1970s till today, Taib’s targeting strategy is to break up these parties. Over the years he’s found the job harder to do.

In the 10th state election in 2011, the reliable partner SUPP (Sarawak United People’s Party) lost 13 seats to DAP and PKR. Though the Barisan Nasional won, Taib finds himself in an uneasy partnership with Pesaka, SPDP (Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party) and PRS (Parti Rakyat Sarawak).

Furthermore, he needs to implement his succession plan soonest possible. Apart from Umno-BN facing a serious big challenge in the coming 13th general election, Taib has to contend with the pressure piling on him to quit and his age.

But he cannot quit according to the federal terms. He has to protect his own interests first, meaning he has to do it his way, which is a hard one.

Taib’s priority now is to pass the chief minister’s post to his most trusted aide to protect his personal interests.

Hence, he has to continue the job of breaking up the Dayak parties that pose a challenge to his power and plans even though they are in BN.

But what is happening now is that after he breaks up one Dayak party, another mushrooms and new problems arise.

    Comments: GREAT SENTIMENT!-

Brothers & sisters Sarawak was an independent country from 1842 to 1942. This was before Malaya became independent in 1957 and Australia in 1900.

The Dayaks and Malays opposed British colonial takeover 1946 and the Chinese opposed Malayan takeover. We all did our part for Sarawak 1960s.

Sarawakians unite for an independent Sarawak!

    Take back our country!

      • WHAT IS TO BE DONE?

LEARN FROM THE PAST. The answer is simple but the solution is tough to reach.

You need to have a plan of action, organise the people and have an iron will to fight it to the end- like Rentap and all those who followed in his footsteps……

Sarawakians have a long burning fuse and it may take another 50 years for them to liberate themselves from the post 1963 Malayan colonial rule..

It took probably 20 years of preparations for the Sarawak underground anti-colonial resistance movement to reach the 1962 stage of uprising and they persisted in their struggle till 1990. Even then it was the Brunei Uprising on December 8 2012 which propelled the Sarawak underground resistance movement into action.

For us the new wave of anti-colonial fighters who are not so ideologically bent we have one big advantage that is access to the internet media and even the air waves. But we are still floundering and seeking the path of our salvation…

Seen in perspective the Sarawak resistance fighters were ORGANIZED, they had a party and a leadership, a vision, discipline and an army and be prepared to sacrifice their lives for a cause.

But this is no longer fashionable even we have a common cause. We are not even prepared to hold a demonstration as seen in the case where MOCS’ much promoted event was scrapped because the leaders could not cope with the pressure.

To be blindingly honest, we don’t even have a “work in progress” anti-Malayan colonial front such as that exists in Sabah The ingredients exist but it is not organized.

We can only live with the shame and humiliation of being subjugated under the Malayan colonial thumb!

This is not to be discouraging. We should work to get rid of this shame and humiliation.

If one person (& we must surely have more than one out there!) presses on with anti-Malayan colonial struggle, we have not surrendered! As long is the torch is kept lit and the fire passed on we can win in the end.

We must work to break the silence and fear that still grip many of us.

The 1963 period represents the darkest period of our history of 70 years of colonial rule.

1962 was a shaft of light that broke through the dark clouds when the people were united in the 3 British colonies for independence. It was a moment we should look at and see what we can learn from and draw on the lessons of the past 50 years.

The solution lies within us. The “force” is within us to challenge and destroy the forces of evil that besiege us.

  4. Am speaking from NZ, rated among the world most democratic, uncorrupt countries:
Sarawak’s biggest criminal & his cronies have stolen directly or indirectly, billions of $ from the people. He was elected to serve his people, instead he made himself a King and continued self-aggrandization for 31 years to this day, without the slightest trace of humility or remorse. He still stands & speaks proudly. Gosh! How can you tolerate this another day! Sit-ins, stop-work, blockages, protests, marches, should have started 30 years ago by NZ’s standard. Has no one in Sarawak got any gut? Burn his Rolls Royce and buildings for a start, that will set balls rolling and trigger changes. The PM obviously supports deception, cheating & multi-billion thefts on a grand scale. Where is his sense of shame? And his legitimacy to remain in office?

    • WHAT IS YOUR WISH LIST FOR CHANGE?

VERY GOOD SUGGESTIONS- ALSO HAVE A PEOPLE’S MARCH ON THE KUCHING PARLIAMENT…

Burning of the ugliest building in Kuching will be a favour for all but think of the millions going up in smoke. May be best to turn into a tourist hotel as an oddity…

But no guts even to hold demo last July when MOCs cancelled the planned demo after Bersih2 although many were keen in Kuching but no leadership.

Sarawak PKR leaders flew to KL the colonial capital instead of uniting the people and leading a demo in Kuching.

That would have helped to break down people’s fear of the fascist dictatorship…

However, the burnings started already…may be these will spread to Kuching soon.

The rising ha begun…..the storming of the Bastille will take time.

We urge the people to spare the historic buildings and the YB’s palaces so we can use them to house the homeless…. The oil refineries must be taken back and used for Sarawak ….\

Lastly don’t forgot the timber tycoons… they must be among the first to be arrested with Taib gang and charge in court for their role in stripping Sarawak

Let’s make it a bloodless revolusi and put the crooks on trial and sentence them to life time hard labour planting trees and cleaning the polluted rivers and contaminated factories in Mukah and Bintulu.

Recenlty a small revolution took place in Wukang Guandong China in a people’s peaceful uprising against gov’t backed land grabbers (sounds familiar?).

China has been accused of “suppressing” human rights but the authorities gave way and agreed to the people’s demands for a stop to the land grabs and to conduct free elections.

The West accuses China of being “undemocratic” but they do have local elections. However, these have apparently become very corrupted. Hence it is possible the people’s parliament became a “rubber stamp” like the Malaysian Parliament.

The point is that if the people who are so “suppressed” can succeed in China why can’t the Sarawak people when they are supposed to be “free”?

      What an irony!

  5. As I mentioned before, Taib is able to stay on for so long because he uses the money stole from the state to bribe Umno as well. That’s why Najib cannot touch him now. Taib is smart. He also make sure all his ministers are also dipping their dirty hands into the cookie jar so that he can have full power over them. That’s why they are all full of praise for him when on cue. They are all afraid of losing their positions, hence their free access to the gravy train. Greed for money is their weakest link and who but Taib play it to the hilt.

    • Taib & Kutty are rich and it’s because of principally corruption.

But the bigger picture is frightening and we should stop it.

Corruption is so bad because we are a dicatorship. You can’t bribe people if the institutions function well. That they managed to bribe with impunity is because our country has gone to the dogs and you should vote BN out in GE13 and keep a very keen eye on the voting.

Can you imagine UN wants Malaysia to ensure a free and fair election in Burma?

WTF does Ban Kim Moon think he’s doing? He came here and praised Najib’s 1Malaysia logo and propped him up. But the ISA is still there and that idiot Hshammuddin had not seen any draft of the abolition or amendment!

It sounds like a conspiracy. The Malaysia present gomen will send people to Burma on order of UN and help the army junta fix the election against Aung Su Suchi and her reform party!

  6. The paramount thief minister’s politics of deception has been waning since 2006. The more discerning, well informed and educated voters in urban and semi urban constituencies know what to believe, how much to believe and what not to believe. Election bribery by BN in the form of cash, building materials, boats, generator sets, food and other goodies no longer seem to work and even in some rural constituencies.

The paramount thief minister, Taib Mahmud, should prepare himself well, emotionally, spiritually and mentally to live a life behind bars where he will be denied all the luxury befitting an arrogant king. His humble request for even a sex doll might be denied too.

  7. ARISE SARAWAKIANS- PREPARE FOR INDEPENDENCE!

    PETRONA$ TOWER$ = $ABAH TOWER + $ARAWAK TOWER-

20% royalty for our Sabah Sarawak own oil is a joke when it should be 100%.

Mahathir for his self glorification and enrichment caused he Petronas Towers to be built with Sabah/Sarawak oil revenues.

To get 100% we have to become independent and take back our country and wealth!

It is now seen clearly that Sabah Sarawak oil has been financing the development of Malaya while impoverishing the 2 colonies.

This issue was examined by an American Professor Dr. Fred Mehden of Rice University USA who prepared a paper on Petronas.

    http://www.rice.edu/energy/publications/…/NOC_Petronas_TronerVDM.pd..

In his paper he pointed out that:

“The company (Petronas) received its powers from the 1974 Petroleum Development Act. That piece of legislation granted Petronas ownership and exclusive rights and powers over Malaysia’s hydrocarbon resources.

Thus, Petronas, as the holding company, has never been privatized and has continued to state that it has no intention of being privatized. At the same time, the government acts as a shareholder and receives dividends”.

“The third significant area of expansion has been in Petronas financing of major government sponsored infrastructure projects in Malaysia outside its traditional core energy
    interests.

The two most noteworthy mega-projects have been the building of the Twin Towers, the then highest building in the world, and the construction of the new national government administrative center Putrajaya. The Twin Towers was part of an overall effort to make use of the land previously part of the Selangor Turf Club in the middle of a fast growing section of Kuala Lumpur. It was to be financed by a joint venture between Petronas (with 51% equity) and Petronas Usaha Tegas and the Selangor Turf Club. While touted as a commercial venture which would replace its then headquarters building, the construction of the then tallest building in the world fit into the national leadership’s desire to provide a platform for illuminating the country’s position as a modern and successful society. The building was also presented as the centerpiece for developing downtown Kuala Lumpur and its surrounding park was extolled for its addition to the city’s quality of life…….

The second “mega project” was the building of a new Federal Government capital, Putrajaya, outside Kuala Lumpur. This new capital is intended to relocate Federal offices from other city centers, particularly those in Kuala Lumpur, to a new, more open and modern set of facilities. Again, Petronas was the major equity holder, this time in partnership with Khazanah Nasional, the Federal government’s investment arm, and the National Heritage Fund.

Both of these projects brought a series of criticisms. It was claimed that there was government coercion of Petronas to provide the financing and that these “mega projects” were illustrations of Mahathir’s self-glorification.

Why should a small country such as Malaysia construct a monolith like the Twin Towers? Others saw these efforts as outside the Petronas core interests and a drain on the company’s finances, particularly during the Asian economic crisis. It was argued that money spent on the Twin Towers and Putrajaya could have been better used in expanding the firm’s core energy activities and particularly its overseas projects.

There is little question that Petronas has been a “cash cow” for a variety of government projects. However, two points also need to be made. Petronas management has not always “rolled over” to government requests as seen by the refusal to take fiscal responsibility for the ailing national airline MAS. Secondly, not all of these projects appear to have been ultimately unprofitable to the company and are not examples of government confiscation of the firm’s funds without repayment. 30 At the same time, it is legitimate to ask if Petronas would have entered into these projects without its close association with the national government…”

The above shows how the UMNO Government has misspent valuable money which could be used for the development of Sabah and Sarawak and not treat them as colonial cash cows through Petronas control of their oil and gas.

So it is not wonder that cracks are appearing in the ugly facade of Malaysia which has been robbing the 2 colonies.

If we can see that Sabah and Sarawak have been re-colonized by Malaya then the question is not how to fix the bad things about Malaysia such as stopping the plunder and UMNO Malay supremacist racist system and so on.

The question and demand we need to make is the de-colonization of Sabah and Sarawak by Malaya

If the Malaysia Agreement is voided for the reasons given above, so much the better as there is nothing to hold us in Malaysia. We can just weak out as there is no agreement.

Since last year Sabahans have started a campaign to collect signatures for a UN Petition to review the 18/20 Points Agreements. Whether the objective of review is well placed their slogan is very clear in saying “Sabah Sarawak Keluar Malaysia”.

This can be reached at http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/sabah-sarawak-rights.html

  8. OUR COLLECTIVE INDECISIVENESS, DISUNITY & OIL MONEY KEEPS TYRANTS IN POWER

We should examine how closely UMNO PBB BN remains in power. What Awang says is the modus operandi of the CRIMINALS who betray our trust.

The real thing that keeps them in power is their control and misuse of our national wealth.

Taib’s crooked uncle Rahman signed away our oil rights to Kuala Lumpur in 1976 (?). Now Mahathir Badawi and all their families control Sabah and Sarawak petroleum through their Petronas nominee companies. They are the tentacles that is sucking out our wealth.

The oil revenue not only developed Malaya, built the Petronas Towers (renamed: Sabah & Sarawak Towers!) but finances the UMNO BN grip on power for the things they do as described in the article.

And also FLOM wasteful shopping trips around the world.

These and all the “development” scams and subsidizes unpaid billions loans have come from us here in Sarawak and Sabah.

So readers – no use reading all the web papers if you are not doing your share to stop this robbery and save Sabah and Sarawak from certain bankruptcy if it is allowed to go on.

To get rid of these parasites we MUST UNITE as one and not be divided as this is what UMNO and Taib has done…..

We must get rid of them before we can go the next step – independence. Or unless you are prepare to go for the lot yo have to take even more serious steps like an Arab Spring.

And in case you still are unaware the fire already started…..So for goodness sake unite with those who are already fighting the injustice and gangster domination of our lives!
