Masing raps authorities over ‘disgusting’ water supply to Sungai Asap residents

“The quality of water supply to people in Sungai Asap is disgusting! The authorities responsible should be ashamed of themselves,” the PRS president said in a strongly worded statement issued Tuesday morning.

“No excuse is acceptable. How can we do this to the people of Sungai Asap, who have sacrificed so much so that Sarawak and its industries can function and have electricity,” Masing added.

He was referring to the Bakun Dam, the largest in Malaysia, and one of the largest in the world, which necessitated the relocation of about 9,000 rural dwellers when construction began in the 1990s.

Masing was also referring to Sarawak having Malaysia’s lowest electricity tariff as a result of the hydroelectric dams.

“The people of Sungai Asap have complained over the years to no avail. This Government mustn’t tolerate any more excuses from the authorities concerned,” he added.

The dam, whose reservoir is roughly the size of Singapore, is presently the core component of the Sarawak Corridor of Renewal Energy.

Masing was reacting to a story in a Sarawak daily, published on Tuesday, highlighting the murky water supply, which one resident described as “unsafe for drinking, washing and bathing”.

PRS Youth chief Bit Surang, a resident of a local Sungai Asap longhouse, was quoted as saying the water supply had never been this bad since they relocated in 1998.

“Sometimes we have to endure dry taps, and sometimes, we have to deal with murky water,” Bit said, “but last week’s incident has been the worst thus far”.

  1. Why blamed the government and who is the government ? Talking big just to impress the press or may be the residents of Sg,Asap. This kind of statement reflected the quality of our elected representatives lacking consciousness. But in the end of the day it is this kind of quality that the rakyats still preferred to elect. Who is to blame ? One Chinese saying ‘ just like your balls being squeezed by two layers of woods.’.

  2. Someone said the Damned dam brought more good then bad to the resettled natives. He said clinic and school are part of those progress as a result of the damned dam but what is the point of having a clinic when the people remained poor and malnourish for lack of resources and sources of food and school filled with hungry kids?

Torstein, taib, pbb, bn and malaya must be made responsible for these people’s problems not only with water but also arable lands and the conditions of the longhouses.

Bit Surang said they endured dry taps in the past but as a politician responsible for the wellbeing of those in sg. asap, what has he done to help fill those dry taps with water?

He should go to Kuching and whack the balls of torstein, taib and the rest of them who put his people in this unbearable situation and squeeze some water from them!

Since the Land Development Ministry is one authority responsible and Dayak Blowhard Number One Masing happens to be its minister, is Masing going to slap himself for dereliction of duty?
