Dr M ready to reach out to BN’s anchor in Sarawak

Filed under: Politics — Hornbill Unleashed @ 8:02 AM

Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad indicated that he was prepared to reach out to Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu Sarawak (PBB), which is instrumental to BN’s hold in Sarawak.

“I would like to talk to them. Whether they would like to talk to me or not, I don’t know.

“Everybody seems to be very shy nowadays. Last time I came, people can greet me, but now it’s a little restrained,” he told a press conference after arriving at Kuching International Airport at 4.50pm.

Mahathir, who is also Pakatan Harapan chairperson, was asked to respond to speculation that he will try to rope in PBB if the opposition was unable to win enough parliamentary seats in Sarawak to form the federal government in the next general election.

BN controls 25 out of 31 parliamentary seats in Sarawak and more than half of those, or 14, are held by PBB.

Umno does not contest in Sarawak as local parties, including PBB, have been insistent that Umno does not enter the state.

Mahathir, who is also Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) chairperson, was in Sarawak to unveil Harapan’s manifesto for the state.

Mahathir said he hoped Harapan can pick up “quite a number” of parliamentary seats in Sarawak.

When asked for a specific number of seats Harapan was targeting, Mahathir replied: “Enough to form the (federal) government”.

He assured that Harapan’s manifesto for East Malaysia will take into consideration of the unhappiness in Sabah and Sarawak with regard to its status within the Malaysian Federation.

“I think lots of people are unhappy. We need to look back at the reservations at the time of the Malaysia Agreement 1963.

“We will look into all those reservations – 16 items in Sarawak, 20 items in Sabah.

We need to look at them and find out what the dissatisfaction is about and we will remedy that.

“They want to be in control of their petroleum products, education, etc. We will look into that. We will come with an open mind,” he said.

Yesterday, at least three opposition leaders, namely PKR’s Zuraida Kamaruddin, Hee Loy Sian and Chua Yee Ling, were barred from entering Sarawak for the unveiling for Harapan’s state manifesto tonight.

However, top leaders including Mahathir and DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang were allowed into the state.

Mahathir, when asked about the barring of the three opposition leaders, cheekily responded: ” It shows that Sarawak is very independent. You have your own passport, almost”.

Under the Malaysian Agreement, Sarawak and Sabah retain control on immigration affairs.

  1. I watched TDM at the Ceramah in Kuching. He looked sick and coughed during his speech. Yet he came to meet us Sarawakians. He said he will not last long, and this is last shot for Malaysia. He can’t help us anymore at the next GE. Think about it, whatever his faults, his every word and every gesture now is an apology. Let’s focus on the bigger evil, and vote for change.

    • SUPP was silently happy that none of the SUPP leaders were arrested. They were celebrating when Opposition leaders were arrested. Fuk the idiots in SUPP.

  3. In PBB there are two assholes and idiots, Karim Hamzah and Wan Junadi. Their stupidity make them belonging to the same low life idiots like Nazri Aziz, Abdul Rahman Dahlan, Salleh Said Keruak and Nor Omar.

  4. PBB sold Sarawak’s rights to the Federal Govt ie reduced the State to merely one of the States of Malaysia, rights over oil and gas, fully supported the law passed in 2012 by Parliament limiting the continental shelf of the State and worst still Wan Junaidi’s PBB led BN govt sold the rights of the natives, namely, malays and dayaks, over their customary land to the rich foochows chinamen just because these foochows sponsored the election campaign of PBB. Those were all PBB did for Sarawak, stripping the State dry of its wealth and now in Canada the court has directed disclosure of the sources of money used by the company owned by Taib’s (former PBB President and Chief Minister of Sarawak) daughter to purchase properties there. So its Wan Junai who talked nothing but lots of rubbish!

  5. Pakatan Harapan promised Sarawak and Sabah it would revisit the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) and renegotiate a deal that would be fair to all, ahead of polls due by August 2018.

Amidst shouts of “hidup Tun” (long live Tun) from some 2,000 people who braved Kuching’s evening thunderstorm, the coalition chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad said what was needed were fair terms to all the three territories that agreed to form Malaysia – Sabah, Sarawak and Malaya.

Dr Mahathir said the federal governments before and after him had deemed fit to renege on MA63 by going to parliament where MPs from Malaya are in the majority to bulldoze what had been agreed.

The politician, who was Malaysia’s longest-serving prime minister from 1981 to 2003, said there were never any negotiations on what they wanted.

        • In comparing MO1 with TDM you forgot Atlantuya, Hussien Najadi, Kevin Morias, AG sacked, MACC arrested by special branch, Ops Gopi. Nobody got murdered in Tun’s time, only Anwar got a black eye and the guy who did it went to jail. LKS demanded and got answers in Parliament for some major scandals Forex, BMI, Memali, unlike 1MDB. And the answers he got were not hogwash either, if you have followed the Forex RCI. Still unable to see the difference? How about Mat Tyson’s political career being ended for being caught for a miserly AUD 1mil or so and not USD 2.6B. And Hudud which TDM kept buried for 22 years and now resurrected under MO1?
